Reflections on Revision

My writing process usually consist of trying to really look in to what I have been given to read. I usually try to have a good understanding of what the summary is on the story, poem, article, or whatever is so may be that I am given. Once I have accomplished that I then try to analyze what I have read, sometimes this is harder then others. Be able to analyze a piece of writing takes more time to really look into what you have in front of you. I usually always revise my papers. I think by doing this you are able to write a better paper and have more people understand what you are trying to get them to perceive. The benefits of doing so is basically what I just stated. You can make a better paper after having someone more experienced go through and analyze and proof what you have originally wrote. Just because you think your paper makes sense does not always mean that it does. I thought that my first draft was really good and after getting notes on it I realized how much work I really needed to do to it for others to understand what I did.

I plan on really focusing on what notes I was given and to really look at the blog comments I was given by my fellow students and as always, plan on having my husband look it over as well. You can never have to many people look at your paper and give ideas and suggestions, it only improves the work you are trying to accomplish.

  1. It's great that you said that you will be going through your blog comments to see what others said about your writing. I honestly didn't really think of that. That would be a good way to step out of your own mind and see your paper from a different perspective. Good luck on your revisions!!

  2. It's true that you can't have too many people look at what you have written but as much as it is helpful, it can also become a hindrance. I say this because if you have more than five six people looking at your paper, it may misconstrue the original thoughts of your paper and make you change it completely. Though hey, if it helps you and keeps you on track to have many people look over your paper, then I say don't change a thing. It is a good thing though that you said that you will be looking not only at the teachers notes but at blog comments to because it would be what would happen in a classroom anyways.

  3. I think you have some helpful insights, I also noticed that Reanna thought it was a good idea to go back and check your blog for any input. After getting my rough draft back, I too saw how much improvement my paper needed.

  4. Hello Lindsey,
I like your statement that "you can never have too many people look at your paper and give ideas and suggestions". That is very true. When we write, we often write in a style that is easy for ourselves to understand, but it may not be as easy for someone else to actually read our paper. The more people who you can get to review your paper and critique it in a good way, the better your paper is more likely to be. Keep up the good work and keep writing!

  5. I really liked how honest you are about yourself and your abilities as a writer. Not everyone can admit that they need to improve on their writing skills. I as well always have my husband read what I have written, he is always giving me suggestions. I agree that you can never have to many people look at your paper. With all of those different people they are going to be able to see things that you or the others have missed. Good Luck in your revision.

  6. Good Post!!
I agree revision is so necessary especially after seeing how much fixing the drafts needed. I really like how you go back to the blog post and use those comments for revising. This is a great way to see if your paper is comming across to others like you wanted it to. I also agree with your statement you can never have to many people read your paper. However I did see in one of the comments that it could become a hinderance, it could quite possibly become a problem and could become very confusing. But I guess that's when you can just ignore the comments you don't understand or see fit to help the paper.

  7. Good idea on going through your blog comments on what others had to say about it! I am going to do the same thing because as you said it never hurts to have too many people look at your paper. Just remember that your paper has YOUR voice in it and no one elses'. If you take our input then that's great, but if you feel that it isn't for the best for your paper then don't use it. Just remember that the reader wants your voice, not a million voices in one paper.

  8. Being able to analyze our own Ideas is a hard task, One of the ladies in the learning center always tells me that the only way of analyzing our own ideas is when some one else reads our paper, and like you said Having people to read them only improves and gives shape to them. 9. Your view on revising seems to be very good. You understand the importance of revising a paper to add strength and clarity to it. I like how you mentioned that you have other people help in revising your papers. Peer revision is a very helpful thing in my own writing, but sometimes I feel that if I do the revisions myself, I am able to do better. When I have other people help with revision I tend to confuse myself. When the other person reads my writing they try to add their own style to it, and then when I try to add that to my own papers, it doesn't work and I end up not using it anyways. A big thing when it comes to my revision process that might help you as well is to have someone else read your paper, and not do any revisions, but instead have them tell you only if the paper made sense. That little bit of insight helps a great deal when it comes to polishing up a paper. You seem to have a good process already, but hopefully my few hints will help you to make that process a little easier.
